Dirty vs Clean Air Analysis

In Formula 1, dirty air refers to the turbulent airflow left behind a car as it moves at high speeds. This disturbed air disrupts the aerodynamic performance of a following car, making it harder to generate downforce—especially in corners—leading to reduced grip and increased tire wear.

As a result, drivers often struggle to follow closely or attempt overtakes in dirty air zones. Understanding dirty air is crucial in F1 because it directly affects race strategy, car design, and overtaking opportunities. With recent regulations aimed at reducing the effects of dirty air, fans can expect more competitive and exciting on-track battles.

To explain the graph above - we separated each track to 30 minisectors and for each sector in each lap we calculated how far is the car ahead. Then we categorize each piece of data in the 4 categories above, and after summing up everything we get the final result.

F1 2025 Race Pace per driver

In Formula 1, race pace refers to the consistent speed and lap times a car can maintain over the course of a Grand Prix, taking into account factors like fuel load, tire wear, and track conditions.

Unlike one-lap qualifying speed, race pace reflects a car’s overall performance and efficiency during long runs. Strong race pace is crucial for securing podiums and executing successful race strategies, including undercuts and pit stops.

Teams analyze race pace data to optimize setups, manage tire degradation, and maximize points. Understanding race pace helps fans and analysts evaluate which cars are genuinely competitive over race distance, not just in qualifying.
