Hungarian GP 2026 Practice Recap: How We Got Here

Before Qualifying, here's everything you need to know from FP1, FP2 and FP3 at the Hungaroring — and the short version is that this weekend has flipped on its head three times already.

FP1 Recap: Leclerc Leads a Rookie-Heavy Opening Session

Charles Leclerc set the early benchmark on Friday morning with a 1:19.075, nearly half a second clear of Max Verstappen, with Lewis Hamilton completing the top three in the sister Ferrari.

The headline story, though, was who wasn't driving. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli handed his Mercedes to development driver Frederik Vesti (an impressive P7), while Oscar Piastri sat out for McLaren rookie Leonardo Fornaroli as part of the mandated rookie sessions — Cadillac, Haas and Alpine also ran young drivers.

The session's biggest casualty was Lance Stroll, whose Aston Martin suffered a suspension failure big enough to keep him out of FP2 entirely — a painful start to the weekend where Adrian Newey's heavily upgraded AMR26 made its debut.

FP2 Recap: Ferrari 1-2 as Hamilton Hits the Front

Friday afternoon belonged entirely to Ferrari. Hamilton went fastest with a 1:18.729 — set on soft tyres that were already six laps old — beating teammate Leclerc by 0.148s, with Lando Norris almost half a second back in third. Verstappen and Russell rounded out the top five in a windy, low-grip session that caught several drivers out.

It was a rough afternoon for the championship leader: Antonelli ended up only P13, nearly two seconds off the pace, struggling with brake issues, lock-ups and gusty conditions on his first laps of the weekend. With Hamilton now his closest title rival — trailing by 45 points after Antonelli's Spa win — Mercedes has real work to do before Qualifying.

The session was red-flagged when Franco Colapinto lost his Alpine and crashed at the final corner, while Stroll's Aston Martin couldn't be repaired in time, leaving him with zero Friday laps.

FP3 Recap: Norris Strikes Back Just Before Qualifying

Saturday morning changed the picture again. After a slow start and a red flag for Sergio Perez, whose Cadillac stopped at Turn 2 trailing smoke, the final hour turned into a genuine four-team fight.

Hamilton briefly went top, Antonelli finally showed his true pace by jumping to P2, and Leclerc dug out a lap on old softs — but it was Lando Norris who found the only 1:17 of the session, finishing 0.117s clear of Hamilton. Antonelli's recovery to P3 is the big pre-Qualifying storyline for Mercedes fans, while Verstappen ended up P7 after losing time in the middle sector.

One more variable for Qualifying: Turn 1 was partially resurfaced overnight after driver complaints about bumps on Friday — worth watching on the opening Q1 runs.
