Austrian GP Starting Grid.. or something like that!
Austrian GP Starting Grid.. or something like that!

George Russell took a dramatic pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix with a last-gasp lap of 1:06.113s, snatching top spot from the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in the closing moments — and just after Max Verstappen had crashed out of Q3.

The chaos unfolded as drivers began their final runs. Verstappen lost the rear through Turn 9 and slammed into the barriers, triggering yellow flags that threatened to wipe out everyone's improvements. Kimi Antonelli, who had held provisional pole after the first runs, backed off and couldn't improve.

Russell, however, navigated the yellows — insisting afterwards he had lifted — and found a couple of tenths to leapfrog the Ferraris, who were ahead of the incident on track and also improved.

That sets up an all-star front of the grid for Sunday: Russell on pole, Leclerc second (+0.236s), Hamilton third and Antonelli fourth, with Verstappen classified fifth despite his crash. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri line up sixth and seventh for McLaren, ahead of Isack Hadjar and the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad.

There was drama further back too. Pierre Gasly missed the Q3 cut by just four hundredths in 11th, while Williams endured a double Q1 exit with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon in P17 and P18 — Sainz again sliding through the final corner. Cadillac's big upgrade package couldn't lift them off the back, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas taking P19 and P20, and Aston Martin propped up the order with Fernando Alonso ahead of Lance Stroll.

Top 5: Russell, Leclerc, Hamilton, Antonelli, Verstappen

George Russell snatched top spot in the final practice session at the Red Bull Ring, pipping Mercedes team mate Kimi Antonelli late on with a 1:07.096s to go 0.038s clear. It capped a strong Mercedes Friday-into-Saturday, with the Silver Arrows looking quick on another hot day in Spielberg as air temperatures touched 31°C.

McLaren set the early pace, Lando Norris leading on softs with a 1:07.832s before being told his left mirror was completely broken. Antonelli soon took over, going quickest by nearly three tenths, and the two Mercedes drivers spent the rest of the hour swapping the benchmark. Antonelli improved to a 1:07.134s with around four tenths in hand before Russell found the lap that mattered in the closing stages.

Lewis Hamilton produced a strong effort to slot into third, just 0.115s off Russell, briefly going fastest in the first sector before fading on the lap. The McLaren pair of Oscar Piastri and Norris followed in fourth and fifth, while Max Verstappen could only manage sixth — and reported "constant weird interference" on his radio that forced an earplug change.

It was another scrappy session for Williams' Carlos Sainz, who was shown a black-and-white flag for driving unnecessarily slowly and later slid off at the final corner. Cadillac stayed near the back after their FP2 troubles, with Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas P19 and P20.

Kimi Antonelli topped a busy FP2 at the Red Bull Ring with a best lap of 1:07.014s, ending Friday's running on top for Mercedes and backing up his fastest time from FP1. McLaren looked sharp throughout, with Oscar Piastri slotting into second just 0.237s back and Lando Norris third — a strong showing for the team at Spielberg.

Several drivers handed their cars to rookies in FP1 and returned for FP2, including Charles Leclerc, who'd stepped aside for Dino Beganovic as Ferrari worked to optimise their latest power unit upgrade. Norris set the early benchmark on mediums in the 1m 08s before Antonelli became the first to crack the 1m 07s bracket once soft tyre runs began.

It was a miserable day for Cadillac. Sergio Perez ground to a halt at Turn 6 and brought out a Virtual Safety Car despite an ECU change after his FP1 problem, and Valtteri Bottas reported smoke in the cockpit before a small fire broke out on his car's floor. Neither driver made it back out, leaving the American outfit bottom of the timesheets with plenty of work to do.

Max Verstappen wound up fourth after a less-than-smooth session — including a mid-session seat adjustment — ahead of Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Isack Hadjar. Leclerc completed the top 10 (0.841s off the pace) alongside Liam Lawson and Gabriel Bortoleto.

Top 5: Antonelli, Piastri, Norris, Verstappen, Hamilton

Kimi Antonelli set the pace in a Mercedes-dominated FP1 at the Red Bull Ring, topping the timesheets with a 1:07.796s on softs to edge team mate George Russell by just 0.040s. Oscar Piastri was best of the rest in third for McLaren, around a tenth further back.

Six rookies stepped in for the opening session, including Dino Beganovic in for Charles Leclerc at Ferrari as the team continued work on their power unit upgrade.

It was a rough start for Red Bull. Max Verstappen's car repeatedly dropped into anti-stall and wouldn't fire up, keeping him in the garage early before he eventually got out, used the soft tyre and climbed to fourth — though he complained of poor feeling and overheating tyres with track temperatures hitting 50°C.

Team mate Isack Hadjar was also stuck until the final 24 minutes with car issues, and reigning champion Lando Norris lost most of the session to a hydraulic leak, only emerging in the last 14 minutes.

The Mercedes pair traded fastest laps throughout in their own private duel, Antonelli surviving an early Turn 1 lock-up to stay ahead. The session ended under a red flag when Sergio Perez's Cadillac stopped on track with a mechanical problem.

Behind the top three, Verstappen headed Lewis Hamilton and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad, with Norris, Franco Colapinto, Beganovic and Ollie Bearman rounding out the top 10.

Top 5: Antonelli, Russell, Piastri, Verstappen, Hamilton

About the Racing Statistics Austrian GP Live Stream

Racing Statistics covers every Formula 1 race weekend with free live watchalongs and data-driven analysis. The Austrian Grand Prix is one of the shortest and fastest laps on the calendar — 71 laps around the Red Bull Ring, where slipstreaming, three DRS zones and heavy braking into the uphill corners make it one of the best overtaking circuits of the year.

Every session is streamed live with on-screen timing, sector data and telemetry overlays so you're not just watching — you're understanding exactly what's happening on track and why.

Every stream includes:

  • Live timing and sector breakdowns

  • Real-time tyre strategy tracking

  • Telemetry overlays and lap time evolution

  • Full session commentary and reaction

  • Permanent VOD replay after every session

Austrian Grand Prix 2026 – Key Facts

  • Circuit: Red Bull Ring, Spielberg

  • Lap distance: 4.318 km

  • Race laps: 71

  • Race distance: 306.452 km

  • First held: 1970 (Österreichring) — Red Bull Ring era since 2014

  • Lap record: 1:05.619 – Carlos Sainz (2020)

  • Most wins (Red Bull Ring era): Max Verstappen (4)

The Red Bull Ring sits roughly 700 metres above sea level in the Styrian hills. Officially a 10-corner lap, only seven corners demand braking — but its trio of long straights linked by three consecutive DRS zones from the main straight to Turn 4 make it a magnet for late-braking moves and uphill battles into Turn 3.

Austrian GP 2026 – What to Watch For

Hamilton's momentum — Lewis Hamilton arrives off the back of his first Grand Prix win for Ferrari in Barcelona, cutting championship leader Kimi Antonelli's advantage to 41 points. The Red Bull Ring is one of the rare circuits where Hamilton has never won — can he change that and blow the title race open?

Antonelli under pressure — The 19-year-old leads the Drivers' Championship but is coming off a retirement in Spain after an electrical failure ended his win streak. Austria is his first real test of handling adversity from the front.

Red Bull's home race — Spielberg is owned by Red Bull, and Max Verstappen holds the record for most wins here. With his future still up in the air, expect Red Bull to throw everything at their home event in front of the Orange Army.

Russell still in the fight — George Russell won here in 2024 and capitalised on Antonelli's Barcelona retirement to close the gap. A strong Mercedes weekend keeps him in title contention.

McLaren chasing redemption — Lando Norris took pole and victory at the Red Bull Ring in 2025. After signs of improvement in Spain, McLaren will be eyeing a first win of the 2026 season.

Heat and weather — A European heatwave has Styria forecast well into the 30s all weekend, with a storm risk on the horizon — a genuine variable for tyre management and strategy.
